What makes University of North Texas unique?

The University of North Texas (UNT) was founded in 1890 in the college town of Denton, Texas, and currently covers more than 1,000 acres just outside of the Dallas-Fort Worth area. This school expanded over the last 50 years to include a medical school, a South Dallas campus, and a public law school. North Texas has over 40,000 students and offers a majority of classes with 20 students or fewer, giving the large state school a more personal academic charm. The University of North Texas operates on a semester-based academic calendar with highly productive academic research institutes that specialize in a range of business, education, engineering, and psychology programs.

The graduation rate at UNT is 64%, and the school has a student-to-faculty ratio of 24:1, which is typical for a flagship state institution. Prospective students should note that Texas residents pay in-state tuition at about half the rate that out-of-state students pay, making it an affordable yet competitive option for local high school graduates. Undergraduates typically live on-campus at one of 15 residential living complexes and can participate in a large Greek system depending on their interests.

The University of North Texas is known for the Intensive English Language Institute or IELI, the largest intensive English program in Texas, where international students learn reading, writing, and speaking at the UNT Denton campus. UNT athletic teams are represented by their campus mascot Scrappy the Eagle and compete in the FBS at the famous Apogee Stadium. Notable alumni include television host Dr. Phil McGraw, singer Norah Jones, and musician Michael Lee Aday AKA Meat Loaf.

Question

Who are the notable alumni?

1 Answer

The list of famous UNT alumni is just about as long as the line at Chik-Fil-A at lunchtime (and yes, there's one of those in the University Union in case you're wondering). For starters, Norah Jones, the Grammy Award winner and modern queen of jazz got her start in UNT's Jazz Studies program. Drummer for the Eagles Don Henley and Musician Meat Loaf are two other former UNT students who hit #1 on the Billboard charts during their careers. It's also where Dr. Phil McGraw, better known simply as Dr. Phil, earned his graduate and professional degrees in psychology. And if you're a sucker for a good vampire novel, you probably know Ann Rice, author of Interview with a Vampire and over 30 other bestselling horror and fantasy novels. Lastly, here's one for the football fans: 2009 NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year award winner Brian Waters and Dallas Cowboys Running Back Lance Dunbar also went to UNT.

Question

What is the campus setting like?

1 Answer

Answered by: Universities.com

Two words are consistently used to describe UNT: big and bold. The campus is 875 acres of sprawling campus greenery spotted with larger-than-life brick buildings that flaunt historic and modern flair. The 14 residence halls, which offer living options from singles to suite-style, each have their own character. Some halls offer themed housing like UNT Serves, where residents share a passion for giving back and tackle local and national service projects together. There is also a Student Health and Wellness Center that provides an exceptionally wide spectrum of health services, from traditional health care services to dental, mental health, massage therapy, nutrition, eye care, x-rays, screenings, and pharmacy services. Did you know UNT also has a full service bank and a money management center where students can learn how to budget? As a student you get all of this and a big, bold helping of so much more.

Question

What are the online learning and extension/adult learning opportunities?

1 Answer

Answered by: Universities.com

You can get a UNT education no matter where you live. The school mostly offers online degrees and certificates at the graduate level. Options include marketing, special education, library sciences, applied behavior analysis, storytelling, hospitality management, and health informatics. Students can also enroll in accelerated online graduate programs where the classes last eight weeks instead of the traditional 15 weeks. It's the fast track to an MBA in organizational behavior and resource management, or a Master of Science in educational psychology or educational leadership. But if you are looking to earn a bachelor's degree online, the school offers four options: rehabilitation studies, applied technology and performance improvement, information science, and applied arts and sciences. If you just love to learn or need to fulfill continuing education requirements, The Lifelong Learning and Professional Development Office runs courses online and on campus. You can even sign up for professor-guided trips to visit places like Machu Picchu, Northern Ireland, or New Zealand.

Question

What are the athletic highlights?

1 Answer

Answered by: Universities.com

The Mean Green golf team has made a name for themselves nationwide. To date they have appeared in a whopping 34 NCAA tournaments and earned 81 tournament championships, 29 conference titles, and four NCAA crowns. The team attracts golfers from far and wide; players on the current roster hail from nearby Texas towns to places like Germany, Mexico, and South Africa. The women's soccer team has also been on top of its game since day one. This team has not suffered a single losing season in its 21-season history. In fact, these ladies have won 11 conference championships and four NCAA tournament appearances. The long-standing football team played its 1,000th game in late 2014 in the 30,000-seat Apogee Stadium. This stadium, which opened in 2011, was the first newly constructed college football stadium to receive LEED Platinum certification, meaning it's designed to be highly energy efficient and sustainable. As you can see, "go green" has more than one meaning at UNT!

Question

What are the school's academic highlights?

1 Answer

Answered by: Universities.com

UNT has made a name for itself among the nation's most elite research universities. In 2016 the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education classified UNT as one of 115 doctoral universities that have the "highest research activity." Building on the faculty's strengths and interests, the university launched four research institutes in 2015. Areas of focus within these institutes include logistics and transportation, bio-based product development, manufacturing and structural material development, and human environmental impacts. Speaking of the environment, three faculty members are sure to make a positive impact with their research in the near future. In 2015 Professors Dane Crossley, Warren Burggren, and Aaron Roberts were awarded $2.7 million by the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative to study the effects of oil spills on fish so future scientists can be better prepared to handle oil spills. Students can make their own exciting impacts with UNT's many student research opportunities. For instance, undergrads can conduct research in areas like environmental chemistry, kinetics, and spectroscopy through the National Science Foundation's Research Experiences for Undergraduates program in partnership with the chemistry department.
